AbstractBurnout is a psychological phenomenon that is common among professions that have a high demand for empathy, such as those in the mental health field. School counselors are more at risk of feeling burnout than other professions because of numerous demands from the job, role conflict and ambiguity, large caseloads, and the amount of time spent on noncounseling related duties. Implementation of the comprehensive school counseling program has been found to have a positive impact on student achievement. When school counselors experience high levels of burnout, it impacts their ability to effectively deliver counseling services, thereby negatively impacting student achievement. Prior research on school counselor burnout has based results on data collection from participants that included primarily Caucasian, female, elementary, middle, and K-12 school counselors who were members of ASCA. There is a gap in the literature that does not include minority high school counselors who are not members of ASCA. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between predictor variables of school counselor burnout and how burnout affects the delivery of the comprehensive school counseling program among secondary professional school counselors who were both members and non-members of ASCA using Maslach's multidimensional theory of burnout. This quantitative correlational study surveyed a sample of 121 high school counselors using the Maslach Burnout Inventory -- Human Services Survey and the School Counseling Program Implementation Survey. Participants completed the survey using Qualtrics and the results were downloaded into the Statistical Package for Social Sciences and analyzed using multiple linear regression to determine the predictive relationship between school counselor burnout, demographic variables, and implementation of the counseling program. Results indicated that lower age and higher years of experience were predictors of high school counselors' burnout, and higher school counselor burnout predicted the implementation of the counseling program. Results of this study support the burnout theory that states job-related stress affects a person's job performance. This study provides high school principals with data that indicates that burnout affects a school counselor's implementation of the counseling program, so measures should be taken to minimize contributing factors of school counselor burnout. Future research could obtain qualitative data to explore why age and years of experience are predictors of high school counselors' burnout. Future researchers could also examine why women high school counselors are more prone to burnout than their male counterparts.
