Abstract | Restorative Practices is a social science that studies how to create, strengthen, and repair relationships. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to examine the impact restorative practices have on the rate of out-of-school suspensions and office discipline referrals, as well as the perceptions educators, have regarding the effectiveness of restorative practices in schools. This research study analyzed discipline data, demographics, climate survey results, and interview responses from educators. Four years of suspension, discipline referral, and enrollment data were examined and two of those years were measured to determine if there were a statistically significant reduction in the rate suspensions and referrals were issued for violations of the student code of conduct. The study took place in a medium-size high school located in west suburban Chicago, with approximately 1500 students. The data collected and analyzed were inclusive of all grade levels, genders, and races. It was determined from analyzing and comparing data from the 2015-16 and 2018-19 school years that out-of-school suspensions decreased from 82 to 54, however, the reduction was not statistically significant. During that same period, office discipline referrals increased from 2386 to 3223. Therefore, the results from the study indicated that restorative practices had minimum impact on reducing suspensions and discipline referrals. Qualitative results indicated that restorative practices were not fully understood by all interviewees, and there were mixed results as to the relationship restorative practices have on school climate.
