AbstractThe problem addressed in this study was that there was a gap of knowledge regarding the predictors of satisfaction and learning outcomes of online homeland security graduate students. Without this knowledge, universities would not be able to maintain a homeland security program that would meet its intended objectives. The purpose of the study was to identify the predictors of student satisfaction and learning outcomes for online homeland security graduate students. Five independent variables (course design, dialogue, instructor activities, self-regulation, and student motivation) and two dependent variables (student satisfaction and learning outcomes) were identified. The research questions were used to determine if there was relationship between all predictors and student satisfaction or learning outcomes. A 41-item online questionnaire was sent via email to 310 online homeland security graduate students enrolled in a mid-Atlantic state university. Responses from 37 participants were scored and analyzed using a multiple linear regression. Results revealed the only independent variables, course design (M = 18.34, SD = 2.530), t (35) = 3.791, p < 0.001, and dialogue (M = 18.34, SD = 2.530), t (35) = 2.045, p < 0.049, were identified as predictors of student satisfaction. None of the five independent variables were identified as predictors of learning outcomes. Implications affect instructors, online homeland security graduate students, and universities. Universities can utilize results to increase student satisfaction by implementing course design features that are user-friendly and organized; stimulate learning; clearly communicate course objectives, procedures, and materials, and create a positive and constructive dialogue between instructors and students by utilizing video conferencing programs to facilitate discussions instead of message boards. Future researchers should conduct a longitudinally designed study to better understand the predictors of student satisfaction and learning outcomes of online homeland security students better.
