Abstract | The transition to a four-year university may be a particularly stressful time for first-year college students as students balance greater academic responsibilities while trying to navigate the unique social expectations of the collegiate environment. These challenges may be especially poignant for first-generation college students who are the first in their family to go to college and who may not have access to same familial support and knowledge about the college system as their continuing generation peers. Using an online survey, the present study explored the relationships between college generational status, levels of depression, and sense of belonging in first-year college students. Results suggested that college generational status was not significantly associated with levels of depression or sense of belonging; however, levels of depression were significantly negatively associated with sense of belonging. These findings may be helpful for college counseling centers to assess and address sense of belonging as a unique factor that may impact mood symptoms and encourage further understanding of the individual characteristics (such as college generational status, race, and gender) that may play a role in students' sense of belonging.
