AbstractA qualitative case study research design was used to describe the affect a teachers' interpersonal efficacy level has on building relationships with African American middle school males. The Teacher Self-Efficacy Survey (Woolfolk-Hoy, 1993) was administered to gauge teacher self-efficacy levels of possible participants in the research study. Using that population of survey respondents, purposive sampling was used to select participants for the case study. Thirteen teachers participated in individual interviews, two focus group discussions, and allowed the researcher to conduct non-participant classroom observations during the timeframe of the research study. Semi-structured interview questions were developed by the researcher and used during the individual interviews and focus group panel discussions. The semi-structured questions were created to gain an understanding of building relationships and daily interaction with African American middle school males based on the research participant's interpersonal efficacy level. A variety of experience and background to describe the nature of building relationships with African American middle school males was offered by the research participants. Through data analysis and triangulation, emerging themes such as authentic recognition, genuine interest, and consistent support were identified.
