Abstract | The following doctoral project emphasizes the importance of reading aloud to children beginning at birth. This project focuses on multiple aspects of reading aloud activities, such as the benefits children receive and the bi-directional benefits (e.g. attachment) received. However, the main focus is specifically on the parental benefits of reading aloud, given the current lack of information on this specific topic. As the reader will observe, through a comprehensive critical review of the available literature, interviews with chosen field consultants, and children's book questionnaire, it became clear that a tool was needed to support parental participation and to further encourage parents to engage in reading aloud activities. While the research demonstrates the many benefits of reading aloud activities to children, there is much needed growth to support and motivate parents to engage in this invaluable activity. As a result, a children's book was created as a step toward decreasing the deficit in the literature regarding the parental benefits received from reading aloud activities. Within this project, the reader will observe the development of the children's book through gathering research and information from the literature and field consultants. Additionally, the children's book itself lists the potential parental benefits, a mindfulness activity that can be used with both parent and child to support the decrease of emotional distress, as well as an instructional guide to support the reader in applying this tool with its intended purpose. Finally, the reader will learn of noted limitations, as well as future directions, for this project. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
