AbstractOn March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic and the following day, entire states began ordering the closure of all schools. By March 25, every public school in the United States was closed and underlying challenges unveiled themselves in every different shape and form. Being a student or youth (ages 12-25) during this time meant possible loss of essential school support systems, isolation from friends, experiencing food scarcity, grappling with family challenges, lack of internet access or technology, or perhaps absence from school entirely. Utilizing Community School strategies can accelerate response, collaboration, and equitable impact. It is vital that youth who are low-income, have a disability, and/or of color are uplifted and student voices are included in order to make the important change that needs to occur. This report is intended for youth and adults with three objectives: (1) To create greater awareness of youth (ages 12-25) experiences throughout the COVID-19 pandemic; (2) To highlight Community School strategies, recommendations and examples of how communities have been able to address and meet the needs of youth; and (3) To provide a clear process to develop and implement empowering youth engagement strategies. [This report was prepared by the Next Generation Coalition (NGC), a youth-led Coalition for Community Schools network.] (ERIC).
