AbstractThe 2019 HEPI/Advance HE "Student Academic Experience Survey" shows that student wellbeing remains lower than wellbeing among the general population of young people and that anxiety levels have increased since 2018. The authors of that report make a link between these anxiety levels and a growing volume of student assignments. Given that student wellbeing is often discussed in terms of access to support and care services, the author of this report was interested to explore this effect of academic practice further. Could it be that teaching and feedback are contributing to poor student wellbeing? This Policy Note presents the results from exploring the dataset a little deeper to try to answer this question. This reports finds that higher education institutions should see increasing their students' experiences of helpful teachers and useful feedback not just as important to student achievement but also as part of their wellbeing strategies.
