AbstractThe purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the college choice process of African American students who chose to enroll in Christian colleges. Researchers have examined the college search/choice process from a variety of different perspectives but the literature is limited when it comes to examining college choice from the perspective of identity development in adolescence. Identity development is considered an essential antecedent of fruitful and sustaining adult functioning, thus it is important to consider how adolescent students navigate their identity development in two specific areas--religious/spiritual and racial identities--as it pertains to the college choice process. The literature review examined the history of religious colleges, college choice framework and the conceptual models of religious and racial identity development. A qualitative phenomenological research method was utilized to capture meaning from the lived experiences of 20 African American students from six different Christian colleges who participated in the study. Data was gathered through semi-structured interviews and analyzed through thematic analysis to uncover and to identify the key themes in the college choice process for African American students considering Christian colleges. The student experiences, as demonstrated through the interview data, encompassed their personal knowledge of how much (or how little) their religious and racial identity development informed their college choice process. Five key themes emerged from the data analysis which include: (1) The Spirit Leading; (2) Silence; (3) Racial Conversation Gap; (4) Identities in Progress; and (5) Strength. One sub-theme was identified: Coaches Influence. Implications for practice included intentional, proactive conversations by high school teachers and counselors and college admissions and student affairs professionals with African American students regarding race and spiritual development processes.
