Abstract | Parents' perceptions regarding the home literacy environment and their ability to provide their children with literacy experiences and materials was the focus of this quantitative, exploratory quasi-experimental research study. Parents' ability to provide quality literacy experiences and materials provides a foundation for their children's future academic knowledge. However, parents do not always provide a quality literacy environment for their children. Children who lack a quality literacy environment can experience an academic gap which places them at an academic disadvantage when compared to their peers (Dexter & Stacks, 2014; Feng et al., 2014; Skwarchuk et al., 2014). Without early literacy intervention methods, children's academic gap will continue to increase which could result in an inability to achieve academic standards. The current study examined parents' perceptions of their ability to provide a home literacy environment during the early childhood period, which has been identified as a critical time period for providing early literacy intervention. Participants completed the Home Literacy Experiences Questionnaire and answered questions regarding their perceptions of the home literacy environment. Participants also participated in an early literacy intervention to possibly improve their self-efficacy regarding their ability to provide quality, literacy experiences and materials for their children. Participants then completed the Home Literacy Questionnaire following the early literacy intervention session to determine if improvements were made to their self-efficacy. The current study provided significant information regarding parents' self-awareness and confidence in their ability to provide a positive home literacy environment for their children. The results of the research study indicated that parents' perceptions could be positively improved following an early literacy intervention session. The results of the study also suggested that children's home literacy environments could be improved to support and encourage children's learning. It is recommended that additional research be completed on the topic of home literacy and parents' perceptions and the possible influences and possible co-occurring factors.
