Abstract | The purpose of our study was to examine mentors' conceptualization of mentoring in a residency program. By examining mentors' conceptualization of mentoring in such a context, our findings reflected four main themes: (a) professional transmission, (b) extant knowledge, (c) reciprocal learning, and (d) self-improvement (via external presence). Our findings illustrate mentors' conceptualizations of the dispositions, behaviors, and knowledge and skills that were influenced through mentoring in a residency program. Our findings also identify aspects of mentoring that are missing or limited in the literature and may further define mentoring in this context. Finally, our findings have the potential to inform other residency programs regarding goals, expectations of mentors, and identify perspectives that may be used to build mentor capacity.
