AbstractChinese parents are increasingly embracing college as a means to a better future for their children. Private independent institutions are prevalent throughout the country, yet there is continued apprehension about the type of education that is offered at independent universities. This qualitative narrative study reveals the life stories and reflections of first-generation college students who attended a regional independent university in central China. I interviewed 22 participants (mostly junior and senior students), who are the first in their family to attend a post-secondary institution. I used first-generation literature as the foundation for this study. Although the first-generation literature is focused on western countries, I found that much of the research applied to students in China. I used the research of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu and his work on Cultural Capital as my lens. Bourdieu's research revolves around how people use their belongings, skills, personality and education to obtain social mobility. I also used Patricia McDonough's research related to access and college preparation as another lens. Both of these researcher's work applied to the first-generation student experience. The students shared their frustration about the pressures related to taking the gaokao and expressed how they managed expectations while showing a sense of appreciation for being the first in their family to attend college. Almost all participants expressed concern about their future after college with many wondering if they were ready for the job market.
