Abstract | The work of the later Wittgenstein has recently been taken up by a range of philosophers of education in English, such as Winch (1998), Peters (1999), Burbules (2010), and others (e.g. Aparece 2005). In their interpretations, these scholars have dealt variously with the difficulties posed by Wittgenstein's repeated use of the English word "training" in observations such as "any explanation has its foundation in training. (Educators ought to remember this.)" (1967). In German however, Wittgenstein actually speaks of Abrichtung, a term which refers exclusively to animal dressage or "conditioning"--even to "breaking" a creature's will. This paper explores the implications of Wittgenstein's systematic use of this surprising term, and constructively reinterprets Wittgenstein's reflections on training and education in this light.
