Abstract | Effective educational leadership is the cornerstone of organizational success. However, is there a magic formula for identifying, selecting, and retaining individuals who fit the criteria? In a modern, ever-changing, globalized, competitive market, having the right educational leaders can be the difference in an organization's sustainability or demise. Conversely, burnout could drive effective educational leaders out of the higher education institutions (and possibly the field). While many researchers have proposed the link between emotional intelligence (EQ), leadership, and burnout, few researchers have identified the associations with expatriate workers in government higher education institutions. Findings from the current research indicated a strong negative correlation exists between leadership style and burnout, where EQ mediates the interaction. As external recruitment costs continue to rise, it becomes increasingly important for leaders in government higher education institutions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to minimize recruitment costs, while selecting and retaining the best leaders to move the organization closer to accomplishing their mission and vision.
