AbstractThis empirical study of "American Exceptionalism: Psychological Capital and Psychological Ownership as predictors of university professors' leadership style," explores the question of the professors leadership style with three hypotheses in one focused research area of interest: "Is there a relationship between Professors' Psychological Capital (Hope, Optimism, Resilience, Self-Efficacy-attitudinal) and Psychological Ownership (Territoriality, Ease of Belonging, Accountability, Self-Efficacy-behavioral, and Self-Identity), "and" 1. Transformational Leadership Style, 2. Transactional Leadership Style, and 3. Passive Avoidant Leadership Style, when controlling for Gender, Ethnicity, Education, and Age?" Three research instruments with strong internal reliabilities and validities were used in this study. Psychological Capital and Psychological Ownership were the independent variables of interest and they were measured respectively by "Psychological Capital Questionnaire" (PCQ) and "Psychological Ownership Questionnaire" (POQ). The third instrument, "Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire" (MLQ) measured the dependent variable or criterion variable of Transformational Leadership, Transactional Leadership, and Passive Avoidant Leadership. Multiple regression technique was used to examine the relationships of the independent variables of interest (PsyCap and PsyGown) with the dependent variables of interest (Transformational Leadership, Transactional Leadership, and Passive Avoidant Leadership), while controlling for demographic variables of Gender (dichotomous), Ethnicity (categorical), Education (categorical) and Age (continuous). Key findings were: Both Psychological Capital (PsyCap) and Psychological Ownership (PsyGown) were predictors of Transformational and Passive Avoidant Leadership • When analyzed together, PsyGown accounted for 35.7% variance explained (Self-efficacy-b 31.4%, Self-Identity 3%, Accountability 1.3%) for Transformational Leadership • PsyCap Resilience accounted for 4.9% of variance explained for Transformational Leadership and 3.8% for Passive Avoidant Leadership • Gender was a predictor of Transactional Leadership (Males > Females) • Ethnicity was a predictor of both Transactional and Passive Avoidant Leadership.
