AbstractConsidering the stigmatization of Muslim Americans in the post September 11th climate, coupled with increasing numbers of Muslim-Americans, this study aimed to research the individual variation in sensitivity to rejection that may be faced as Muslim college students navigate their college environment, establishing mentoring relationships and engaging in academic-relevant activities. A new measure was developed to test for this, the Religion Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire (Religion-RSQ) with a sample of 107 online participants. Armed with this new measure, the current study investigated how and if Religion-RS could negatively affect mentoring relationships, and if Attachment security, a variable that has been linked with successful college adjustment and mentoring, could act as a buffer. A sample of 85 Muslim Stony Brook University students were given the Attachment Script Assessment (ASA), Religion-RSQ, Personal- Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire (Personal-RSQ), Academic Related Experiences Survey, and a number of mentoring measures (Attitudes towards Mentoring, Mentors in your life Pre-College and College years). The results indicated that Attachment security and Religion-RS affect different planes, with attachment relating to mentoring engagement behaviors and Religion-RS relating to mentoring expectations and attitudes. Religion-RS affects the first step to starting a mentoring relationship, positive attitudes toward mentoring, and therefore, attachment security is not able to act as a buffer within that first step. There were gender differences in average Religion-RS scores, with females, especially females who wear the headscarf/hijab, reporting higher scores- a finding that would be worthy of future examination. Regression analyses indicated that although both Religion-RS and Personal-RS impact on positive attitudes toward mentoring, they also contribute unique as well as shared variance in predicting mentoring attitudes. Results also indicated that number of high school mentor-like experiences positively correlate with number of pre-college mentors, and further that the number of pre-college mentors positively correlate with number of college mentors, thereby suggesting that the predisposition and the skills that might be needed for establishing mentoring relationships begin in high school. In light of the importance of adolescence in identify formation, short-term developmental studies that track both Religion-RS in Muslim students and their mentoring experiences from high school into college should be pursued.
