AbstractIn this study, the researcher explored the perceptions of adjunct distance education faculty working at a for-profit higher education institution related to their sense of engagement and job satisfaction. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to illustrate the perceived advantages, disadvantages, and areas of consideration for managing employees who work completely from geographically dispersed locations. This case study involved seeking feedback from adjunct distance education faculty through the use of an electronic questionnaire delivered through Survey Monkey. The population in this study consisted of 40 adjunct distance education faculty, who work at a specific for-profit higher education institution. The findings generated six main themes for consideration when seeking to improve levels of engagement and satisfaction when managing employees who work in a virtual work environment. These six main themes included access to and perceptions on the value of professional development, virtual employees' preferred management style, advantages and disadvantages of virtual employment, perceived factors that influence virtual employees' sense of engagement, and perceived factors that influence virtual employees' sense of job satisfaction. These findings combined with those presented in previous research studies add valuable insight into management styles, systems, and processes that are more likely to garner higher levels of engagement and job satisfaction when working in a virtual environment. Future studies could provide additional insight into the world of virtual employment by comparing and contrasting the findings in this study at the for-profit higher education institution to other for-profit and non-profit higher education institutions as well as to include the population of full-time faculty for further analysis.
