Abstract | The purpose of this qualitative descriptive phenomenological study was to explore the phenomenon of school counselors as leaders, who work in school districts in the state of Arizona. The American School Counselor National Model and the Distributed Leadership Model served as the conceptual framework for this study. The three research questions of this study were: How do high school counselors describe their lived experiences as school leaders? What specific barriers do high school counselors experience as leaders? What strategies do high school counselors use to overcome barriers they have experienced? The general population for this study was school counselors and the target population was high school counselors. The sample selected for this study included 15 high school counselors from Arizona. Each participant was asked nine open-ended, unstructured interview questions and a closing interview question that allowed the participants to share details of their lived experience with school leadership that may not have been addressed by the interview questions. The most important findings that evolved from the data were multi-faceted with regard to their lived experiences with school leadership, the barriers they experienced in school leadership, and the strategies they used to address those barriers. The raw data was analyzed using NVivo software to codify the information and organize the meaning units and constituents. Eidetic analysis was used to process the data.
