Abstract | Increasingly faculty find themselves in the postsecondary classroom with students who display behaviors typical of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). I designed and distributed a mixed methods electronic survey to discover faculty perceptions of a list of eleven particular behaviors that may create challenges: no eye contact, extended eye contact, repetition of words, questioning, odd vocal tone, head on desk, no notes, no recognition, not answering, not switching topics, repetitious body gestures. Participants (N = 165) represented an 18% response rate of total faculty from a mid-western public research university. Based upon responses, I identified behaviors that consistently attracted the most attention, elicited the most negative attitudes, responses, and actions. Theory, discussion, and best practices present options for addressing challenges. (As Provided). |
