Abstract | The goal of the 2018 Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards in Physical Education is to develop "physically literate individuals who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity. To pursue a lifetime of healthful physical activity, a physically literate individual: (1) Has learned the skills necessary to participate in a variety of physical activities; (2) Knows the implications and the benefits of involvement in various types of physical activities; (3) Participates regularly in physical activity; (4) Is physically fit; and (5) Values physical activity and its contributions to a healthful lifestyle." This document utilizes an "anchor standard" approach. Five standards establish the overall goals for student learning and these standards are repeated from kindergarten through grade 12. Each standard is comprised of one or more benchmarks that are unique to that grade level. The physical education standards include an appendix that further clarifies terminology used in the benchmarks. Information in the appendix includes the following: (1) A Glossary of terms referenced in the standards; (2) Activity categories referenced in the standards; and (3) Critical elements referenced in the standards.
