AbstractA study was conducted to examine the experiences of nursing students in online nursing programs to explore if the use of innovative technology in the courses would improve faculty presence and effective communication. A gap in the scientific literature was identified concerning the experiences of nursing students regarding faculty presence and effective communication in online Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) completion programs using innovative technology. Therefore, the research question asked was, what are nursing students' experiences regarding innovative technology, faculty presence, and effective communication in online BSN completion programs? To fulfill the study, a basic qualitative method was incorporated. Nursing students, who were well acquainted with the online learning from one college in New York State, were selected. Eleven nursing students were interviewed. Six themes were identified during the analysis of the data. The themes include: online methods, faculty innovation, relationships, faculty participation, challenges, and feedback. Exploring the experiences of nursing students provided the insight needed to work through barriers in faculty presence and effective communication and to ascertain if innovative technology helped enhance this interaction in online education. The conclusion of this research can be applied to all online disciplines and provide tools that can help enhance the student experience with online education. This study may provide future educators with information about the most effective online educational tools and strategies to enhance student experiences with effective communication, faculty presence, and building relationships between students and faculty.
