AbstractThe purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the reading strategies that college students perceive they use to read the materials posted in their online courses. Prior research revealed that online courses tend to be heavily text-centered and many college students are unprepared to comprehend the materials on their own. Two thousand, one hundred and thirteen students completed an online survey regarding their reading strategy use. The reading strategies were categorized into before, during, and after reading strategies. The students were also grouped into categories by GPA: high, medium, and low. The findings revealed that before reading strategies were predictive of academic success. Further analysis revealed that the high GPA students utilized all three types of reading strategies whereas the medium and low GPA students relied on only after reading strategies. The relevance of the research findings and implications for integrating reading strategies into the online environment are discussed, and suggestions for future research are included.
