AbstractThis study compared two groups of Military Science and Leadership (MSL) students to determine whether they perceived Facebook or Blackboard as the superior Learning Management System. The unique conditions of MSL made this study possible as it employs a centralized curriculum at the national level and a subset of programs had innovated to use Facebook instead of their provided Blackboard, making a comparison test possible in a body of knowledge full of satisfaction surveys. A quantitative survey was administered to each group and the data compared against an updated version of the widely used Technology Acceptance Model. Means and correlations were calculated for each group and then compared. Additionally, regression testing and qualitative answers provided insight to the variables and correlations with the model. The results indicate that Facebook was the superior Learning Management System for the delivery of the MSL curriculum in the observed groups. Facebook was superior at promoting interaction with both peers and instructors, found to be easier to use, more helpful in the promotion of learning and better at facilitating learning at the time and place of a student's choosing. Blackboard, meanwhile was superior at protecting privacy. The test was inconclusive at predicting a future intention to use but qualitative answers provided insight for future researchers. The findings have implications for teachers looking to improve social learning, and administrators who must make policy and funding decisions to source Learning Management Systems. Future researches should continue to explore the aspects of "Privacy" and better develop how it relates to on-line interaction in a quickly changing technical environment. Also, the U.S. Army should examine the interaction within the Facebook group for insights on how to reconcile a very difficult problem of fostering a learning environment while maintaining network security within a hierarchical culture that stifles open communication. This study contributes to the body of knowledge by conducting a comparison test and establishing some empirical data on the variable of "privacy.".
