AbstractEach year, 25,000 youth age out of the foster care system (Kirk, Lewis, Nilsen, & Colvin, 2011). This system has historically and primarily focused on child safety and stability, not on assisting youth in meeting higher education and career goals, or becoming contributing, functioning members of society (Leve et al., 2012). Even if they are interested in higher education, many have the added challenges of lack of transportation, parenting responsibilities, lack of financial resources, and needing full-time employment (Unrau, 2011). Only about 10% of youth who age out of foster care enroll in college (Kirk et al., 2011). Foster Care Alumni of America (2015) estimates that there are over 12 million adults in the United States who were in foster care at some point in their childhood. Of those 12 million, less than five percent have a post-secondary degree (Rios & Rocco, 2014). This can significantly impact their long-term quality of life (Kirk et al., 2011). This qualitative, narrative research study focused on providing a voice for seven former foster care youth, engaged with a non-profit organization in the Southeastern region of the United States, as to factors that led them to enroll in higher education or led them to take a different path. The theoretical frameworks of life course theory and resiliency theory provided a means to consider the experiences, events, and relationships that impacted their trajectory. In addition to participant interviews, a photographic elicitation design was incorporated into the research to provide a richer understanding, by utilizing multiple mediums to describe the meaning and impact that these experiences, events, and relationships had on their lives. The four overarching themes that emerged were experiences in foster care, K-12 education, resilience, and one person.
