Abstract | All school districts have children attending who have special dietary needs due to a disability or a food allergy or intolerance. In order for these children to attend school, their dietary needs must be addressed since they are unable to eat meals prepared for the general student population. There is federal legislation which provides guidance regarding meeting the nutritional needs of children. Both parents/guardians and school districts must work cooperatively in order to address special dietary needs. Whether it be in an Individualized Education Program (IEP), Section 504 Plan, or Individualized Health Plan, it is essential that a child's special dietary needs are clearly identified and well documented in a written plan. This is important not only for the well-being of the child, but also for the protection of the school district. When parents and the school district work as a team, a child with special dietary needs is able to attend school in a safe and healthy environment. (ERIC). |
