AbstractThe purpose of this study was to examine cyberbullying policies and procedures in middle schools in a large urban school district located in a metropolitan area of Texas. The researcher obtained the perceptions of middle school principals regarding how they implement policies and procedures for dealing with incidents occurring on their campus. There are federal, state, and local laws that administrators must follow when providing consequences for cyberbullying. The researcher examined how middle school principals respond to cyberbullying incidents that occur on-campus and off-campus. Middle school administrators participated in face-to-face interviews answering open-ended, semi-structured questions with the researcher to gain knowledge about their personal experiences of implementing policies and procedures for cyberbullying incidents. Research questions were developed to allow the participants the opportunity to provide information regarding cyberbullying incidents and experiences that have occurred on campus. Administrators from middle schools (grades 6 through 8) in a large urban school district served as the sample for this study. A purposive selection sample was used to select two administrators from each of the five school district divisions and feeder patterns identified within the school district. A qualitative method was used to develop themes and patterns of cyberbullying. The findings of this study included middle school administrators identifying a need for cyberbullying training on policies and procedures among staff and administrators in the district. A need was identified for the school district to revisit policies that will allow administrators to provide effective consequences in the student discipline data system. Participants recommended that schools be required to schedule meetings during the school year to discuss cyberbullying incidents. Also, parents and students should be included in the meeting process. It was suggested that a template be created and used throughout the district to allow all schools to be aligned with policies and procedures implemented in the school district.
