AbstractPost-secondary education has been correlated to an individual's self-esteem and quality of life. With this commodity being accessible in a variety of formats, there continue to be discrepancies in attainment for males and females. Current research has documented that the number of females who are earning a college degree has surpassed that of males. This phenomenon has highlighted the college education gap that has become predominant in many countries including the United States. Barriers for males have been documented for different ethnicities who are currently pursuing a 4-year college degree in the United States. However, there is limited research on the Punjabi/Sikh culture, which has resided in the U.S. for the past century. Examining barriers to their attainment of a four-year college degree provided critical data to the current phenomenon on the gaps in education between males and females. The problem is that while this group of males may have access to a four-year college degree, they are not taking advantage of the opportunities and may face previously unidentified barriers. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore barriers to attaining a four-year college degree by Punjabi/Sikh males in the United States. The study gathered data from twelve 18-25 year old Punjabi/Sikh males who are currently attending a four-year college who were asked to complete a questionnaire, participate in a focus group, complete a face-to-face interview, and review transcribed interview data. The triangulated data was analyzed using the constant comparative method and organized into themes. The results from this study documented three main barriers that affect Punjabi/Sikh males in their attainment of a four-year college degree, which included student and parental inexperience with college admissions procedures, finances and familial obligations. Adhering to cultural gender expectations and fulfilling the prescribed roles for males in this culture conflicted with the responsibilities of college. Recommendations from this study include a) high school and colleges collaborating with Punjabi/Sikh organizations to provide orientations, b) information regarding the barriers minority males encounter in attaining a college degree be made available to high school and college counselors so they can provide needed support to these populations, c) providing faculty mentors to help transition these students from high school to college. This study provided recommendations for future research to include soliciting information from Punjabi/Sikh females for comparison, soliciting data from Punjabi/Sikh males who do not live at home while attending college, and implementing a quantitative approach so that a larger sample can be reached.
