Abstract | The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the lived experiences of two nontraditional (under 40 years of age) African American female principals who work in the Mississippi Delta. Specifically, I focused on the intersectionality of race, age, and gender as identity markers. I utilized purposeful sampling to select the two participants for this study. Initially, I identified two nontraditional principals to serve in this case study, Principal A and Principal B. I lost Principal A as a participant, therefore, Principal B and myself served as the two participants in this case study. I collected data pertaining to our lived experiences through one in-depth semi-structured interview and three on-site observations along with the collection of field notes. I utilized descriptive and in-vivo coding during data analysis to identify themes within the transcribed interview and observational data. Three themes emerged from the data, 1) "pushed into leadership," 2) "praying and working through challenges," and 3) "mentoring is the way." I crosschecked the findings and interpretations for credibility and dependability by triangulating the transcribed interview data and transcribed field notes via member checking with Principal B. Member checking was conducted via electronic mail and/or telephone conversations to ensure the findings truthfully represented our lived experiences. The three identified themes encapsulated the lived experiences of Principal B and myself as nontraditional Black female principals, and countered the overarching research question for this case study. We share the lived experiences of being pushed into leadership, praying and working hard to overcome obstacles, as well as finding our way as school leaders by selecting mentors. A recommendation for future practice includes public school districts in the Mississippi Delta offering leadership academies to build the leadership capacity of teachers in order to grow them into the next generation of school leaders. A recommendation for future research is to explore the lived experiences of nontraditional Black female principals who live and work outside of the Mississippi Delta.
