AbstractThis study explores the factors that contribute to evangelical pastors becoming bioethically confident leaders of their congregation. This basic qualitative study invited twenty-five pastors who have a M.Div. or similar seminary degree to share their experiences of theological education, congregational ministry, and their views of pastoral moral leadership on medically complex issues. In view of the findings, the author suggests three phases of pastoral development under the theme of becoming. First is Exploration: Becoming Aware, followed by Proficiency: Becoming Confident. Some pastors, characterized by courage and elevated trust develop Mastery: Becoming Accomplished, and become moral leaders beyond their congregation. Pastors develop wisdom through opportunities for apprenticed wisdom during seminary, practiced wisdom during their pastorate, and embodied wisdom for those who become accomplished leaders. A Bioethical Leadership Paradigm is proposed as a way of describing the intellectual, spiritual, and experiential resources the pastor draws on to lead the congregation on bioethical issues. Recommendations for theological educators include (1) requiring ethics and attention to bioethical issues in the curriculum; (2) establishing a biblical and theological foundation appropriate for rapidly changing medical technologies; (3) helping form the pastor as a lifelong learner with an adequate Bioethical Leadership Paradigm; and (4) creating learning experiences that connect theory with the bioethical dilemmas their congregation will encounter.
