Abstract | There is a field of complementary and alternative medicine known as naturopathic medicine. There are five naturopathic schools in the United States of America and two in Canada. Information regarding the practices and experiences of naturopathic physicians, especially relating to the principle of "doctor as teacher" is non-existent. The purpose of this study was to investigate the experiences of the naturopathic physicians who practice the principle of "doctor as teacher". The conceptual framework for this study was experiential learning, a model of learning that can be applied to how or why adults learn through experiences. For this dissertation, a basic qualitative study was undertaken. Nine naturopathic physicians in North America were interviewed. The Central Research Question focuses on the way these physicians educate and encourage responsibilities for their patient's health and well-being, including how they learned to apply the "doctor as teacher" principle, how they apply it in their practice, and the benefits and challenges of teaching patients. These interviews will expand academic knowledge on one of the six principles that naturopathic physicians are trained to use in their clinical practice. The data was gathered using three instruments, demographic questionnaire, interview questions, and physician handouts. The data analysis involved summary, constant comparative method with a matrix, and document analysis. The key finding of this study was that naturopathic physicians have taken one simple concept of educating patients, the "doctor as teacher" principle, to help patient's live healthier lives. This study will discourage rumors about naturopathic medical practices and lead to better understandings relating to actual experiences and improved practices.
