Abstract | Single Black working mothers faced significant challenges in achieving high-level or senior-level leadership positions. The purpose of this qualitative narrative study was to collect, analyze and code the stories told by 10 participants to understand the perceptions and insights of the challenges and barriers single Black working mothers faced in their journey to achieve high-level or senior-level leadership positions in the workplace or the community. Purposeful sampling considered as the sampling method for recruitment of the 10 participants...using qualitative interviewing to collect data was used to conduct semi-structured interview. NVivo 11 Pro software was used to analyze the data and coded data which resulted in eight themes. The eight themes identified: (1) barriers or challenges you faced with education, work, and your road to leadership, (2) overcoming barriers or challenges, (3) experiences that motivated or inspired you to become a leader, (4) strategies for single Black working mothers striving to become leaders, (5) steps you took for leadership, (6) advice recommended for single Black working mothers striving for leadership positions, (7) factors contributed to your decision in leadership, and (8) influence. The findings were vital to single Black working mothers who are striving toward leadership positions. Recommendation for leadership was to enlighten leadership regarding the need to be open for recruitment for more single Black working mothers in leadership positions. Future research encouraged other researchers to conduct more studies on single Black working mothers: their struggles, their aspirations and their leadership.
