AbstractThis study aims to examine the role athletics plays in academic achievement amongst varsity athletes in a large suburban Long Island school district. The study was motivated by six questions using both a quantitative and qualitative methodology. Those questions aimed to answer the extent (1) the overall grade point average of an athlete compared to a non-athlete, (2) African American students perform academically on the ELA Regents when involved in any athletic program, (3) Hispanic students perform academically on the ELA Regents when involved in any athletic program, (4) students with low socio-economic status perform academically on the ELA Regents when involved in any athletic program, (5) male and female athletes perform academically on the ELA Regents when involved in any athletic program, and (6) athletic directors perceive the significance of athletics, community support, socialization, and the tax cap in relation to student achievement among students that participate in athletics. This study advances our understanding of how athletics and the perception of achievement implicate the academic accomplishments of students. The researcher collected data from 425 students who had taken the English Language Arts New York State Regents Exam. To illustrate the findings, the researcher used descriptive analysis and Pivot Tables to examine the relationship of athletes and non-athletes and their levels of achievement on the ELA Regents exam with respect to their gender, ethnicity, and socio-economic status. In addition, the researcher surveyed/interviewed Athletic Directors and their perception athletics had on the impact of student achievement based on four categories. This data was used to potentially correlate the quantitative findings of the study. The predicted impact of the study showed that athletes achieve higher on the ELA Regents as compared to non-athletes except for the African American population. In addition, female athletes outscore male athletes and low socio-economic athletes outscore their non-athlete counterparts. The findings prompt a re-thinking of the assumption that athletes outscore non-athletes as well as create a new direction for a strict qualitative follow-up to the findings in this study.
