Abstract | This study sought to understand Black male physicians' perceptions of factors that contributed to their academic success while in medical school and residency. The researcher gathered information by interviewing six Black doctors and collecting their demographic profile data. The study used a qualitative, narrative inquiry design. This research method allowed the researcher to learn from the participants through storytelling what influences they associated with achieving academic success. To understand better the stories and the impact of race for Black male students, a theory in the field of education called Critical Race Theory was utilized. In-depth interviews were conducted using a purposeful sample of six physicians employed at a major academic medical center in North Carolina. Each participant was asked 10 questions to determine his perspectives on factors that influenced his academic success. The narratives collected from the interviews provided a voice for the participants' perceptions of what it took to become academically successful. The questions from the interview focused on the impact of community support, mentorship, and race. Also explored were obstacles and barriers to overcoming academic success. Also discussed was relevant literature, methodology, findings, implications for change and further research.
