Abstract | According to the National Council of Teacher of Mathematics (NCTM) (2000), K-12 students should be given an opportunity to develop their spatial reasoning abilities. One of the topics that may allow students to develop their spatial skills is forming 3-dimensional objects using spinning and extrusion methods. Also, extrusion and spinning methods provide an important basis on advanced mathematical topics (e.g., calculus ideas related to solids of revolution). A 3-dimensional geometric topic often studied by children in grades K-12 is volume with a focus on students' spatial abilities. Researchers demonstrated the process of students' finding the volume of a rectangular prism to be length x width x height. However, this formula cannot be generalized to cones, cylinders, etc. On the other hand, there is little research about forming 3-dimensional objects by spinning or extruding 2-dimensional figures. The purpose of this study is to understand how middle school students enrolled in a summer program reason about the volume of 3-dimensional objects using extrusion and spinning while utilizing manipulatives and a dynamic geometry program, Cabri 3D. The research design is a case study (Stake, 1995; 2005) in which the data are collected from a bounded system--a summer enrichment program. Eight middle school students (three rising seventh grade students, and five rising eighth grade students) participated in the research study. A five-day instructional unit was planned in which activities were created, so students produces a variety of signs (e.g., gesture, drawing, verbal sign) during they reasoned about the semiotic activities. Throughout the instruction, students were given hands-on materials and their corresponding Cabri 3D sketches. (Abstract shortened by ProQuest.).
