| Abstract | The nursing profession is facing a serious shortage of registered nurses based on current numbers, projected retirements, and estimates of future need. Nursing schools accept the largest numbers of students that they are able to accommodate, but many of these students do not complete the programs; this is especially true for associate degree nursing programs, where 59% of the registered nurse workforce is prepared. The resulting problem is that, in the future, there will likely be too few nurses to provide the needed care. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that enhance success as a nursing student and those factors that may serve as barriers to success as identified by the students, faculty and staff of associate degree nursing programs. Student identified factors were compared with those identified by the faculty and staff. This multiple comparison case study attempted to identify factors enhancing and/or barriers to success through interviewing nursing students in the second year of associate degree programs at three different associate degree programs, two in Tennessee and one in Kentucky. Nursing faculty and staff at those same schools were also asked to participate in interviews to gain their perspectives on success factors and barriers to success. The students were those due to graduate within the year, assuming they would be most knowledgeable as to what enhances or serves as a barrier to success. The results of this study indicated that there are multiple factors that enhance success in associate degree nursing programs and those same factors can also serve as barriers to success. Based on the findings, a number of recommendations were made to enhance success, focused on the students, faculty, staff and associate degree nursing programs.
