AbstractThis study explored the preparation and career paths of academic deans in Church of God (COG) theological institutions located in Latin American and Caribbean. This study used a qualitative research approach and the in-depth interview method for data collection. A group of 14 academic deans that serve in COG theological schools and that represented 13 countries in these regions were interviewed as part of the study. In regards to the expectations of the role, the findings of the study showed that academic deans are expected to be visionary leaders that contextualize the programs in light of the needs of the church and the community and take on a pastoral role to care for the staff and students. Findings suggested that academic deans must develop interpersonal communication skills, have knowledge in the fields of education and theology and maintain a vital spirituality. When considering the career path experiences of the academic deans findings revealed that the career path of the deans was incidental, that appointments to the position were circumstantial and not much training was received prior or coming into the role. Nonetheless, some experiences were identified as helpful in preparation for the role like having ministry experiences, experiences in higher education and experiences abroad at other theological institutions. Networking, self-agency and teamwork were acknowledged as helpful ways to learn the job and relationships were highlighted as important components of the journey. Furthermore, God's calling played an important role in the career path of the deans allowing for experiences of divine guidance, prompting constant prayer, providing a source of sustainment, summoning to service and encouraging a Kingdom perspective of work. The main gap in the career paths of the academic dean was linked to a need for intentional training and for clear models and guidelines for the position and its tasks. As a result, implications for current practice focused on alternatives that the denominational leadership (regional directors, division of education leaders), the upper administration of theological institutions (presidents and board of directors) and academic deans themselves can implement to address the need of intentional preparation and training and maximize the benefit of the useful experiences and methods emphasized by the participants in the study.
