Abstract | The purpose of this exploratory phenomenological narrative qualitative study was to investigate the influence of Facebook on first-generation college students' selection of a college framed within Hossler and Gallagher's (1987) college process model. The three questions which guided this research explored the influence of the social media website Facebook during the predisposition, search, and choice phases of the college choice process model. Eight persisting first-generation college students were selected using a purposeful, snowball sampling, and interviewed. The results indicated an influence of Facebook in each phase of the college choice process model. The implications for practice include: an increase in Facebook interaction between students, teachers, and counselors between a student's 8th and 10th grade years and the consideration of college recruitment to determine their target audience when placing advertisements on Facebook.
