Abstract | The purpose of this case study was to investigate if teacher morale increased, as measured on the Staff Morale Questionnaire (Smith, 1976), after the implementation of a fantasy football league on a secondary campus in southeast Texas. Teaching is an occupation with a high turnover rate (Briggs & Richardson, 1992; Ingersol, 2003; Rafferty, 2002). Upon exiting the teaching profession, many former teachers indicate that low morale was one of the reasons for leaving (Briggs & Richardson, 1992; Ingersoll, 2003; Rafferty, 2002). This study sought to determine that after participating in a campus fantasy football league, did overall teacher morale increase? In order to study this question, The Staff Morale Questionnaire was given as a pre- and post test to 27 certified teachers from a middle school in Southeast Texas (Smith, 1976). The experimental group contained 14 teachers, the principal, and the assistant principal of the school. The control group consisted of 13 certified teachers that did not participate in the fantasy football league. After the descriptive analysis of the statistics, five teachers from the experimental group, who showed a change in morale, were interviewed. These interviews were analyzed to see if the teachers' beliefs about the study matched the results from the SMQ. The researcher concluded there appeared to be a relationship between participating in a campus fantasy football league and a boost in teacher morale. Implications for practice include recommendations for how a campus principal should address teacher morale.
