AbstractThe current study described and analyzed the perspectives of traditional-aged college student-athletes who participated in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I football regarding the impact the sport had on Christian faith development. The study entailed a qualitative research method approach using in-depth semi-structured interviews with 10 purposefully chosen subjects to explore how a NCAA Division I college football program impacts Christian faith development. Through the phenomenological research tradition, categories, themes, and patterns of the student-athlete experience were identified and the following question was answered: How does participating in a NCAA Division I-A college football program impact the Christian faith development of student-athletes within a state-funded, public institution? The theoretical framework undergirding this study was faith development theory as seen through the works of Fowler (1981). The study has implications for administrators and staff who want to better understand the role of athletics within the development, specifically faith development, of student-athletes. This research study also added new insight to the study of Christian faith development in NCAA Division I college football within a state-funded, public institution.
