AbstractPrior studies document the need to increase the racial and ethnic diversity of the health care workforce. Different approaches to increase the diversity of the healthcare workforce include implementing bridge, transitional and academic enrichment programs; diversifying college admissions criteria; and developing models of education that enhance the recruitment a of underrepresented minority students. Success in dental hygiene education programs is often defined as program completion within a specified time frame; passing the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE); and passing the regional clinical examinations. Prior studies have identified several predictors to success on the NBDHE: undergraduate science grade point average (GPA); pre-admissions GPA and total SAT scores; GPA in the science pre-requisite courses; and dental hygiene GPA and in science courses. The purpose of this study was to determine if dental hygiene students, who enrolled in a program with minimum requirements and prerequisites for admissions, could be successful as measured by passing the NBDHE and regional clinical board examinations on first attempt and become eligible for licensure. The study population consisted of 115 graduates who enrolled on in five dental hygiene programs, under a standardized program curriculum model. The persistence/graduation rate of the total population was 87.66%. The first-time pass rate of the NBDHE was 77.39%, and the total NBDHE pass rate, including passage on second attempt was 89.56%. The regional clinical board examination first-time pass rate was 80.87%, and the total clinical board examination pass rate, including passage on second or third attempt was 94.78%. Using logistic regression, analyses of the data indicated that the entrance examination score, age, race and age were found to be not statistically significant predictors of NBDHE and regional clinical examination passage. Results of a one way NOVA test found a statistical significance between Caucasians and Hispanics on NBDHE passage. There was no statistically significant correlation between NBDHE passage and entrance examination score. The author concludes that conducting exploratory processes on alternative admissions models that allow for more flexible and for an open admissions focus may be valuable to promote the recruitment of non-traditional, minority and at-risk students.
