AbstractStudies have examined methods of communication between home and school and the resulting impact on parents' satisfaction and students' academic achievement. However, there is insufficient information concerning the use of technology to support parental involvement, especially in the area of social media. Drawing from overlapping spheres of influence theory, the purpose of this quantitative action research project study was to evaluate the parental involvement needs of a small, urban, Title 1 elementary school and develop a stronger communication network through the use of technology. The research question determined the need for an alternate method of communication pertinent to curriculum and academic affairs in order to improve parental engagement. Data were collected using a quantitative, cross-sectional, 1-shot survey consisting of 10, 5-point Likert scale response questions given to all teachers and parents of 4th grade students. Questions were coded into 4 constructs and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the level of agreement for each response. Findings indicated that both teachers and parents did indeed feel the need for alternative methods of communication. As a result, a technology-based plan was developed which focused on the use of the educational networking site Edmodo as the chosen method of communication. Implications for social change include providing a framework for this method of communication with parents for other schools, thereby increasing parents' satisfaction and students' academic achievement.
