AbstractThis case study addressed how community college presidents make decisions under conditions that can escalate to full-scale crises. The purpose of this study was to gather data to support the development of alternative models or refinement of existing models for crisis decision making on community college campuses, using an abbreviated decision-making model that proceeds from recognition of the problem to implementation of a solution at the early stages. The research questions addressed the alignment of community college presidents' decision making with the selection criteria of boards and the recommendations of organizational literature, the decision-making behavior of community college presidents related to decision-making models for predictable events, and best practices in decision making used to prepare community college personnel for potential crises. A questionnaire and in-depth interviews were used to collect data from 7 community college presidents on campuses with similar characteristics. After raw data were captured, documents were analyzed using categorical aggregation to establish themes or patterns. The college presidents' responses revealed 14 themes that helped them to prepare the campus for potential crises that included: showing stability in expectations, motivating people, focusing on what is important, developing shared values, becoming a champion for students, having the right players at the table, demonstrating the ability to consult and communicate, developing institutional standards, and eliminating the blame game. The findings confirmed the need to develop alternative models of decision making to handle potential crises. The positive social change implications of improving decision making during a potential crisis may enhance the decision-making processes of the community college president in high-stakes situations.
