AbstractThe number of international students in the United States has been increasing each year, but little is known about their experience. There are recent studies on international students, however, only a few research has focused on international students studying at graduate level. To best study international graduate students' experience, a qualitative research study method Grounded Theory was chosen. International graduate students were interviewed to study if and how they experienced identity development after their arrival in the United States. The goal of this study was to develop a theory that reflected their experience. Until recently, theories originally developed to understand American minorities have been used to study international students. This current study is an attempt to understand international graduate students' experience from their perspective. The data from the interviews yielded a theory but suggested international graduate students experienced far more than cultural identity shift.
