AbstractThis collection of papers introduces the proceedings of the Third Annual Conference--Eurasian Higher Education Leaders' Forum held 11-12 June, 2014 at Nazarbayev University in Astana, Kazakhstan. More than 350 speakers, delegates and participants from more 15 countries attended the Forum. The title of this year's Forum is "Successful Universities: What are They and How to Build One?". The themes of the proceedings reflect the structure of the Forum that has been divided into five panel sessions: (1) What is "A Successful University"?; (2) How to Build a Successful University: Start from a New Institution or Build from the Existing One?; (3) Students' Perspectives on a Successful University; (4) Faculty's Perspectives on a Successful University; and (5) Successful Research Universities. The authors of speeches, papers and case studies come from different social and academic backgrounds and offer their own views, visions, criteria and understandings of a "successful university". They raise debates on the role of higher education in society; definitions of a world-class university, local and international engagement of an academic institution, the role of teaching-and-learning process in a "successful university" and challenges of building successful research universities. One of the strengths of the compendium is that it provides insights of students and faculty members' on the higher education sector's development today. The compendium offers papers grounded in theoretical argument and empirical research and written to provide debate and discussion among policy makers, university leaders, faculty and students. It is hoped that the annual Forum and its conference proceedings will serve as a valuable resource for higher education leaders, faculty members, education researchers and policy makers interested in the Eurasian region. The opening session included the following: (1) Development of Higher Education in Kazakhstan (Gulshara Abdykalikova); (2) Towards Understanding the Role of University in Society (Aslan Sarinzhipov); and (3) What is A Successful University"? (Lynne Parmenter, Murat Orunkhanov, Kairat Kurakbayev). Panel Sesssion 1, What is "A Successful University included: (1) The Quest for a World Class University: Defining the Goal for an Emerging Economy (Alan Ruby); (2) The Importance of Local and International Engagement in Building a "Successful University" (Jane Knight); (3) In Search of Criteria and Factors of Success for a Regional University (Amantai Nurmagambetov); (4) Diversity and Integrity in the Successful University (Humphrey Tonkin); and (5) What Makes a University Successful from the Perspective of Teaching and Student Learning? (Jan Vermunt); Panel Session 2, How to Build A Successful University: Start from A New Institution or Build from the Existing One? presents: (6) Successful Universities (Simon Jones); (7) How to Build a "Successful University"?; (Mary Canning). Panel Session 3, Students' Perspectives on a Successful University provides: (8) What Does a Successful University Look Like?--The Students' View (Rok Primožic); (9) A Strategic, Layered Approach to Evidentially Improving Students' Experiences and Outcomes within A Successful University (Liz Winter); and (10) Promoting Student Mobility in a Global Age (Angela Yiu). Panel Session 4: Faculty's Perspectives on a Successful University presents: (11) The Role of Faculty in Creating a Successful University (Loretta O'Donnell); (12) Contemporary Challenges of Higher Education and Faculty's Role in the Formation of a Successful University (Fatima Zhakypova); (13) The Role of Faculty at Successful Universities (Matthew Hartley); (14) Higher Education Experiences in Kyrgyzstan: Case of OSH State University (Kanybek Issakov); (15) Academic Leadership: A Missing Link in Higher Education Governance in Times of Change? (Aida Sagintayeva); and (16) Faculty's Perspective on Successful University: Perspective from a Regional University (Beibit Mamrayev). Panel Session 5: Successful Research Universities presents: (17) Successful Research Universities: Global Challenges and Local Perspectives (Zhexenbek Adilov); and (18) Successful Research Universities: Development Factors (Zhumakhan Myrkhalykov). The proceedings include concluding remarks (Humphrey Tonkin). Individual papers contain references.
