AbstractSocial work education and social work practitioners are being impacted by the significant increase in the older adult population. Most social work faculty members have not been teaching their students how to work effectively with older adults (Hooyman, 2006). Social work educators need to provide more effective gerontology instruction in order to prepare their students to work with the aging population (Hooyman, 2006; Rowe et al., 2008) and further research is needed to determine the most effective methods for improving social work gerontology instruction (Gellis,2001; JAHF, 2009). The study analyzed leadership styles of educators who participated in the CSWE Gero-Ed Curriculum Development Institutes (CDI) (CSWE Gero-Ed Center, n.d.) to determine which leadership styles of social work educators relate to gerontological transformation in social work curricula. The quantitative study analyzed the leadership styles of social work educators using a validated evaluation instrument, the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) (Bass & Avolio, 2004) and correlated leadership styles with the results of curricula gerontology transformation in their social work programs. Analysis findings are presented, including results of Pearson correlational analysis and the multiple regression analysis. The study confirmed that there is a positive correlation between the transformational leadership style of social work educators participating in the CDIs and effective gerontological infusion within social work curricula was confirmed. The study also supported the perspective that the transformational leadership style is positively associated with more effective gerontology instruction within social work curricula. The study has significance for social work education administrators and other educational leaders attempting to transform their curricula for an aging client population. Recommendations include conducting further studies of gerontological social work educators' leadership styles, further transformational gerontological social work education curriculum changes, and effective leadership training for social work educators and administrators.
