AbstractThis qualitative descriptive case study explored the requirements of the IT industry for education, IT certification, and work experience for entry-level IT professionals. Research has shown a growing problem where IT graduates were not able to meet the requirements for entry-level IT jobs. IT enrollment has decreased considerably over the past several years leading people to question the value and quality of an IT degree. A qualitative descriptive case study was conducted to ascertain the precise requirements for an entry-level IT job from the IT recruiters' perspective. Findings from the study suggested that the entry-level IT job requirements included (a) 1 year of hands-on experience, (b) technical skills like Java and .Net, (c) hardware certifications like A+ or networking certifications like CCNA or CCNP, and (d) soft skills that embody personal drive and ambition. Additional future studies can research the duration, number of, and requirement for IT industry internships. The problem of placing IT graduates came from several directions and entailed several research studies. This research study sought the requirements for an entry-level IT job. Other studies could seek the quality of an IT education as well as the ability and frequency of IT companies working with IS educators to help IT students gain hands-on experience while attending school. If students have the opportunity to apply what they have learned in a real world setting, the students may have a better chance qualifying for entry-level jobs upon graduating.
