Abstract	A call for more baccalaureate-prepared nurses to assuage the predicted nursing shortage has resulted in the rapid proliferation of accelerated Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) programs in the United States. Academic success of accelerated students has not been adequately measured nor compared to traditional BSN students on a national level. The purpose of this study was to compare a national sample of accelerated and traditional BSN students on measures of academic achievement using Health Education Systems, Inc. (HESI) exit exam scores and first-time passage of the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Nationwide archival data consisting of 11,005 exit HESI exam scores and 432 NCLEX-RN pass rates were analyzed using a t test and chi-squared test. Accelerated students scored significantly higher than traditional students on the exit HESI exam and were twice as likely to pass the NCLEX-RN on their first attempt.
