Abstract | Student retention continues to be a major concern in higher education. Every year many individuals enroll in higher education institutions but never obtain a certificate or degree within a six-year span. The following quantitative descriptive-comparative study addressed how academic advisors' relationships with advisees may affect student retention rates in colleges. Three research questions were answered: (a) Is there a significant difference between "Fresh Start Program" (FSP; pseudonym) undergraduates' and non-FSP undergraduates' perceptions of the advising experience?, (b) What are undergraduates' perceptions of academic advising experiences?, and (c) What are Fresh Start Program undergraduates' perceptions of academic advising experiences? The study was conducted at a southern college utilizing 51 Fresh Start Program undergraduates and 51 non-Fresh Start Program undergraduates between the ages of 18-22. T tests analyses revealed both groups perceived advising as more developmental than prescriptive and were not satisfied with the overall advising experience.
