AbstractTo remain competitive in a global economy, institutions of higher learning must commit to excellence and establish as a priority organizational and human resource development (McCabe, 2001). While mission statements from community colleges throughout the country may include similar foci, it is of paramount importance that these institutions of higher learning also have strategies in place to ensure employees from throughout the organization, regardless of job classification, possess or are developing the leadership and personal excellence skills needed to fulfill the comprehensive mission (Martin, 2005). The institution selected for the study has been recognized as a national leader among community colleges for developing a comprehensive mission that embraces positive change and innovation, and for having the ability to effectively execute numerous strategies, based on data, towards the goal of excellence (MetLife Foundation Community College Excellence Award, 2008). A comparative analysis, using the Personal Excellence Map (PEM) (Nelson, Low, & Hammett, 2007), was conducted among administrators, department chairs, and faculty of the community college selected for the study to identify differences in personal excellence indicators. While there were no statistically significant differences found between administrators and department chairs, the data analysis did show statistically significant differences between faculty and both administrators and department chairs in several of the personal skills profiles. Between faculty and administrators, the differences were found in the Personal Excellence Map's Global Personal Excellence score and the Composite Scales of Relationships and Support, Change and Balance, and Purpose and Beliefs. Between faculty and department chairs, the differences were found in the Personal Excellence Map's Global Personal Excellence score and the composite scales of Vision and Guidance, Change and Balance, and Purpose and Beliefs. The findings from this study may serve the institution selected for the study and other community colleges throughout the country that are in the process of developing their human capital, to attain world class and premier status.
