AbstractThe purpose of this study was to explore how the use of video in the cognitive task analysis (CTA) retrospective verbal protocol analysis (RVPA) during a job analysis affects: (a) the quality of performing the CTA, (b) the time to complete the CTA, and (c) the cost to execute the CTA. Research has shown when using the simultaneous VPA during a CTA can expect research participants to find the process laborious and obtrusive to perform. In addition, research participants may automate their task and some may find it difficult to speak out loud while performing the task. The researcher sought the answer to the research question by acquiring expert content through phenonological and structured interviews within two case studies (Group A and Group B) placed on two word tables for analysis. The analysis began with placing the coded data into themes to answer the research question. Based on the results of the coded data, Group A and Group B identified the same types of observable behaviors, but Group B captured 50% more observations than Group A. The second element of the research question asked if video improved the time to complete the CTA. Based on the findings of this study, Group A required less time to perform the RVPA. While Group B required more time to review video during the RVPA, he or she provided twice as much coded data than did Group A. The extra content collected by Group B established a robust pattern of behavior demonstrated by the truck driver. The third element of the research question asked if video improved cost to complete the CTA. While the Group B study cost more to peform than Group A, the only cost difference created in expenses were the mobile eyewear (video glasses). Although time and cost experienced no improvement per the research question, the researcher as HPT practitioner expects to present to the stakeholder how acquisition of the high quality content outweighs time and cost when examining the return on investment. Future research includes exploring how video fits within the various roles that HPT practitioners find themselves such as analyst, intervention specialist, change manager, and evaluator.
